'India emerging a global healthcare destination'

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI NOV. 16. A British citizen, Cyril Parry (59), came all the way to Chennai to get himself a new hip. Ironically, the procedure that was performed on him is called Birmingham Hip Resurfacing procedure. Yet another British national, 47-year-old Elaine Ackrill was treated in Chennai for cancer of the cervix.

A Canadian national, 50-year-old Arunadevi Thurairajan, who was suffering from degeneration of the cervical spine, found relief only after treatment in Chennai.

Apart from the fact that the three were treated in Chennai, one more common factor runs through their cases — Apollo Hospitals. And they are among the large number of foreign nationals who come to India, in search of medicare.

Speaking to the press along with Mr. Parry, Ms. Ackrill and Ms. Thurairajan, the chairman of the Apollo Hospitals, Prathap C. Reddy, said over 95,000 international patients had undergone treatment in the chain of hospitals all over the country. ``This is truly a testimony of faith in the Indian healthcare system and the country's medical talent. It is a reaffirmation of our belief that India has the wherewithal to offer comprehensive medical solutions to the world and is poised to become the preferred global healthcare destination,'' Dr. Reddy said.

He highlighted the need for a public-private partnership with the Government and healthcare institutions to further this aim. The hospital had proposed that the Civil Aviation Ministry increase international flights to not just metropolises, but also smaller cities like Pune, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Hyderabad, which had been able to deliver world-class healthcare consistently.
