Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By Our Staff Reporter
Firemen, helped by residents and shop owners rescued Parthiban, Purushothaman, Ramu, Kumar and Velu. The men were removing the electrical cables in the building when the slab fell, trapping them. Muthu Achari, a resident of Periyar Pathai, said ``It took us 30 minutes to rescue them. More than 50 of us had to help. We used crowbars to heave the slab off.'' A scrap iron merchant near the building said he saw the slab collapse around 12.30 p.m. Mr. Achari said the firemen who helped with the rescue came in two units. The iron merchant said Parthiban had bought the building from Purushothaman six months ago. Parthiban had begun demolishing the building last Friday. All the five were injured in the leg.
