Freedom of Press

Sir, — The recent events concerning The Hindu take me to my college days in St. Joseph's, Tiruchi (1939-43). My friend, M. Swaminathan, and I attended a public meeting where the adviser to the Governor [a civil servant] criticised the Congress for not supporting the Government's war effort.

The next day's editorial in The Hindu, `And he babbled of green fields', criticised the civil servant for attacking a political party and reminded him that he was being paid from the exchequer. Being independent and criticising when called for have been the strong points of The Hindu.

E. Srinivasan,
Bangalore

Sir, — The true intention of the founding fathers of the Constitution has been safeguarded by the Supreme Court. Personal liberty cannot be taken away unilaterally.

Sir, — The Legislature has amended the Constitution nearly 100 times. No freedom, including the freedom of the Press, is absolute. Freedom, rights, duties and responsibilities should go together and are inseparable.

R. Suryanarayanan,
Chennai
