The award is given every year by the Dr. P.S. Shankar Pratisthan to medical personnel in recognition of their services. The pratisthan has also chosen the Bangalore-based gynaecologist, C. Annapurnamma, and H.D. Chandrappa Gowda of Shimoga to receive the Dr. P.S. Shankar Best Medical Book Award for books written in Kannada for 2002. As a special gesture, the pratisthan has decided to award the Dr. P.S. Shankar Special Award for best book in medicine to the last work of the late Meenagunda Subramanyam. While the Vaidyashree Award comprises a purse of Rs. 10,000, a commendation certificate, and a shawl, the best books in medicine in Kannada are awarded Rs. 5,000 each along with a commendation certificate and a shawl. Dr. Gangal's scientific papers have been published in several national and international journals. A recipient of many awards, Dr. Gangal was honorary surgeon to the President. The secretary of the pratisthan, S.S. Hiremath, said here today that the work, "Neevu Mathu Nimma Magu" by Dr. Annapurnamma, and "Nanage Bypass Ayuthu" by Dr. Chandrappa Gowda have been selected as the best medicine books for 2002. Recognising the contribution of Meenagunda Subramanyam to the field of medicine and literature, the pratisthan has decided to present the special award for best book in medicine in Kannada to the last work of Dr. Subramanyam, "Madathe Mathobba Cheluvege." The awards will be presented here on January 1, 2004.
