No violation of human rights: Udupi SP

Udupi Nov. 23. The Superintendent of Police, S. Murugan, has said that the district police are not doing anything that violates human rights while dealing with naxalites.

Mr. Murugan's comments come in the backdrop of some organisations accusing the district police of violating human rights.

He told The Hindu that it was now important to think of the problems naxalites of the People's War Group (PWG) would pose in the future before an issue was made out of the police encounter at Edu village in Udupi district on November 17.

Asked if it had been proved that the extremists had links with the PWG, he said: "It is no longer the question of links. They are the PWG naxalites".

On the challenge posed by the extremists, he said the police were ready to taken on them. The naxalities were going in full speed to challenge the police. "We will not take the challenge lying down. It is they who are on the run," he said.

Mr. Murugan said the district police had taken great care to protect informants. There was a general hatred towards naxalites in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts. The people of these districts did not want any outside intervention. The naxalites were seeking food and other facilities from the people in the villages. The villagers feared naxalites as they had guns, he said.

It was due to the hatred people had for naxalites that the police were able to trace their movements within short time. People were informing the police about their movements. Besides, the police had other ways to trace their movements, Mr. Murugan added.
