Congress should change leadership, says Sangma

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM DEC. 6. The All-India general secretary of the Nationalist Congress Party, P. A. Sangma, has said the Congress should go in for a change of leadership and take "corrective measures" in the wake of its drubbing in the just-concluded Assembly elections.

Addressing a press conference here today, he said the Congress should go in for a change of leadership for its own survival and for the unity of secular forces. "There are many veteran leaders in the Congress who have experience, following and grassroots level contact such as N. D. Tiwari and K. Karunakaran who can take over the reigns of the party," he said.

Terming the verdict of the Assembly polls as a "big blow and humiliating defeat to the Congress,'' he said the elections also saw the weakening of the secular forces.

Mr. Sangma said the elections in the Hindi heartland proved that the BJP could win elections without raising religious issues such as Ayodhya and Hindutva. "The elections were fought purely on the basis of development agenda and economic agenda and it is how it should be in the country.''

He ruled out any patch-up with the Congress even if there was a leadership change.

The NCP was ready to cooperate with the Congress for the sake of the national interest and the unity of secular forces.
