`Education and discipline can change country's destiny'

KALLADKA (DAKSHINA KANNADA) DEC. 21. Education and discipline can help change the course of the country and that is what Swami Vivekananda propagated to Indians after his return from the World Convention of Religions in 1897, the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, said here on Sunday.

Participating in function at a high school here, Mr. Advani said Swami Vivekananda said in the then Madras that year that everybody should accept Bharat Mata as his or her deity for 50 years which should be characterised as an era of devotion to the country through education and discipline. This was what happened after 50 years in 1947 as India attained Independence. It was, therefore, better to have faith in the Gurukula system that had been with us for ages, imparting ancient wisdom. He said there would be a time when everybody would be happy and prosperous and this was the aim of Ram Rajya. The real meaning of Swarajya was attained only by establishing Ram Rajya.

Mr. Advani was here for only 20 minutes and his speech lasted less than five minutes. However, he took time off to visit Shriram Shishu Mandira, an integral part of the Gurukula promoted by those at the helm of the Sangh Parivar organisations. Mr. Advani listened to the children reciting the Bhagavad Gita and the mass drill. Due to paucity of time, the organisers cancelled a series of programmes to be displayed for Mr. Advani and the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Sushma Swaraj. Ms. Swaraj cancelled her visit at the last minute.
