Letters to the Editor
Sir, People against the introduction of Hindi in the Combined Defence Services examinations are not being practical. The decision is to encourage participation from rural areas. Since defence forces are drawn from all parts of the country, there is a necessity for a common language that could be English or Hindi, but cannot be regional languages such as Tamil, Kannada or Oriya. Drawing a parallel with the outsourcing industry, can one imagine a call-centre testing prospective employees in Tamil for a job that requires communicating with Americans in English? Suren. M, Coimbatore, T.N. * * * Sir, Whenever the language issue arises, only the Tamil Nadu MPs protest. All other non-Hindi members keep quiet. This is the major reason for the domination of Hindi in the country. B.R. Iniyavan, Dharmapuri, T.N.
