Fitting tribute

Sir, — Krishnaswamy Alladi's article on S. Ramanujam (Dec. 22) was a fitting tribute to the great mathematician. Once, when Ramanujam was ill, Professor Hardy visited him. He said the number of the cab he came in was 1729, a "dull number."

Ramanujam immediately replied that 1729 was a very interesting figure, since it was the smallest number expressible as a sum of two cubes in two different ways.

Sairam Sanath Kumar,

Kochi, Kerala
