MADURAI DEC. 30. The All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) councillor, K. Bose, was today attacked by five councillors belonging to the party including its leader in the Madurai Corporation council, S.D. Jeyabalan, and the monthly meeting ended abruptly, without any business.

The Mayor, C. Ramachandran, directed the Corporation Commissioner, A. Karthik, to initiate action against them. Later, the Mayor, who met the Commissioner of Police, Vijaykumar, sought protection for Mr. Bose. Meanwhile, the AIADMK preferred a police complaint against three Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) councillors, that they assaulted one of their partyman.

When the council met here this morning, Mr. Bose, representing ward 62, expressed a threat to his life from his partymen and sought protection from the Mayor. The AIADMK members objected to this remark, following which the Mayor asked Mr. Bose to occupy his seat behind Congress and Communist members.

The ruckus among the AIADMK councillors was a sequel to a wordy duel between Mr. Bose and party functionaries over choice of a place to sink a borewell at Jaihindpuram, funded by the Tiruparankunram AIADMK MLA, S.M. Seenivel, on Monday. The quarrel ended in exchange of blows, and the MLA had to pacify them.

Even as the council was discussing civic issues, the DMK south zone chairman, P. Gopinathan, drew the Mayor's attention to the demand by Mr. Bose and sought protection for him.

The AIADMK members sprang on their feet when Mr. Gopinathan referred to the recent murder of an AIADMK functionary in the city. The AIADMK councillors, K. Jeyavel, Jeyabalan, Thangam, Murugesan and S. Subbu, walked towards Mr. Bose, who was shouting, seeking protection, and started beating him up. Congress and Communist members tried to prevent the AIADMK members attacking Mr. Bose.

The Mayor adjourned the meeting and took Mr. Bose to his chamber. The Congress and Communist members raised slogans condemning the assault on the councillor.

When the council met again after half hour, Mr. Bose was asked to sit along with the DMK members. The Mayor demanded all the five AIADMK councillors apologise for their action. As they refused, Mr. Ramachandran, ordered the watch and ward staff to evacuate them. High drama was witnessed as the ruling party members offered resistance resulting in commotion.

As things got worse, the Mayor announced that all resolutions were passed and adjourned the house sine die.

Later, talking to the media, Mr. Jeyabalan, accused the Mayor of having tutored Mr. Bose to raise the issue even before the AIADMK could rake up a specific criminal charge against the DMK west zone chairman, Chinnan.
