Tamil Nadu
By Our Special Correspondent
Even 18 months after the registration of the first information report, the accused, including a ruling party MLA, had not been arrested, the team members said. Addressing newspersons here on Monday, V.R. Suganya, a member of the team commissioned by the Tamil Nadu Federation of Women Presidents of Panchayat Governments (TNFWPPG) said the 32-year-old widowed president, who had two young children, should be given a compensation of Rs.10 lakhs. Ms. Mangalamkutty recalled the confrontation between her family and that of the MLA. She said she was not being allowed to function as the elected head. The fact-finding team made inquiries with the locals, all of whom "feigned innocence" of the incidents. The Kancheepuram Collector had told the team that action was being taken. "We wanted the Chengalpattu town police to offer her protection and they have promised to do so and to complete the investigation," Mrs. Suganya said. "When we met the MLA and her husband, they said they were being unnecessarily blamed for the murder and that they had nothing to with all the charges," Mrs. Suganya added.
