Zoo destroys animal hides

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD JAN. 2. Several animal hides, including those of the tiger, lying in the stores of the Nehru Zoological Park for years were destroyed on Friday.

Zoo officials said that the decision to burn about 28 hides was taken after an inspection by senior officials from the Forest Department. The Additional Chief Wildlife Warden & Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Hitesh Malhotra, the Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife), A.V. Joseph, and the Conservator of Forest, K.S. Reddy, were present during the inspection. The hides destroyed were 11 of tiger, eight of panther, six of spotted deer, one each of black buck, sambar and sloth bear.

"These skins were in a damaged condition and are in a decaying state. We saw no purpose in preserving them," said the zoo Curator, B. Srinivas. The hides were retained all these days by authorities in the hope that they would be of educational value for visitors. "Unfortunately, this did not happen. Hence, the decision," Mr. Srinivas said.
