WASHINGTON, JAN. 19. The Democratic Presidential hopefuls will have to wait until late evening to find out the result of the Iowa caucuses, a wait that could be every bit uneasy to the candidates involved as they are in a major slugfest right till the very end. About 125,000 Iowa Democrats will head out in chilly weather to one of the 1993 caucus sites at 7:30 pm Eastern Time (or 6 am IST on Tuesday). They will stand around those who are supporting a particular candidate. The first results are expected to be announced between 8 pm and 10 pm Eastern Time. It has not been easy by any stretch of imagination to the frontrunner, Howard Dean, who was hammered on all sides by the other three contenders. Each one of them wants to walk away with the prize catch of Iowa which would then bring the necessary momentum for next week's primaries at New Hampshire on Jan. 27; the South on February 3; and all the way to Super Tuesday on March 2. Iowa has a total of 45 pledged delegates. The candidate seeking the party nomination needs 2162 delegates of the 4322. According to one latest poll, Senator John Kerry is now seen to be having a slight edge in Iowa; but many analysts argue that given the last minute change of minds, the race is literally too close to call among all four front-runners Mr. Kerry, John Edwards, Richard Gephardt and Mr. Dean. The former Governor of Vermont who entered the race on comfortable terms suddenly saw himself attacked on not just his so-called inexperience in foreign policy and national security matters but also his record on race relations, trade and medicare. The Vermonter's own gaffes did not help matters either.
