Science congress awards for young scientists presented

KOZHIKODE JAN. 31. The 16th edition of the Kerala Science Congress ended today. The highlight of the third and final day of the event was the distribution of the coveted "young scientists awards''.

The award - winners were chosen on the basis of the scientific papers presented at the programme. The following were the winners:

Chemical Sciences: Mary J. Gladis, senior research fellow, inorganic and analytical chemistry group, Regional Research Laboratory, Thiruvananthapuram.

Life Sciences: Laija S. Nair, division of cancer research, Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram.

Health Sciences: G.S. Sailaja, senior research fellow, bio-ceramics lab, biomedical technology wing, Sri Chithra Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Thiruvannathapuram.

Agricultural Sciences: Diby Paul, Institute of Spices Research, Kozhikode, and D. Preetha, College of Horticulture, Trissur.

Veterinary Sciences: P. Suprabha, Veterinary College, Thrissur.

Biotechnology: T. Vanaja, assisant professor, Pepper Research Station, Panniyur (KAU), Kannur.

Ecology: A. S. Vaidya, College of Horticulture, Thrissur.

Engineering and Technology: K. Jethesh, Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, Thiruvannathapuram. No award was given for best paper in Physical Sciences.

The Vasudev Award for the best project funded by Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) was awarded to Ravindran Ankathil, Additional Professor, research division, Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvannathapuram.

Special awards were given to Narayanaswamy, senior scientist, Centre for Earth Science Studies, Thiruvannathapuam and V. Sarojini Menon, emritus scientist, Tropical Botanical Garden and Research Centre, Tiruvananthapuram.

M. S. Valiathan, executive vice-president, KSCSTE, presided over the valedictory session of the seminar.
