Madurai
By S. Sundar
MADURAI, FEB. 4 . The fourth phase of the Vaigai reclamation project under the National River Conservation Programme to divert sewage from mixing in the river has been expedited, with officials starting the groundwork for gauging the sewage flow through the 11 storm-water drainages. Following a meeting chaired by P.K. Natesan, Superintending Engineer, Environment Management Agency of Tamil Nadu, officials of the Madurai Corporation and the Public Works Department (PWD) have started installing `V-notch' flow gauge on the channels to prepare the detailed project report for the interception and diversion of sewage. "Based on the report, works on constructing lined channels along the river to carry the sewage to Sakkimangalam in the north and Panaiyur in the south would be finalised," the Corporation Assistant Executive Engineer, P.R. Ramkumar, said. A total of Rs. 18.7 crores was allocated for the fourth phase of the Rs. 165-crore Vaigai reclamation project. Under the project, a 12-km-long lined canal for the northern side and a 10-km-long canal for the southern side are proposed to be laid to carry an estimated 30 million litres per day (MLD) of sewage. Two treatment plants, costing Rs. 8.21 crores, will come up during the fifth phase. The flow gauges will be installed at various places, including Vilangudi, Thathaneri, Sellur, Pandalgudi, Sikkanderpuram and Vandiyur (in the northern side) and Kiruthumalnadi, Sottathatti, Panaiyur and Anupandi (in the southern side). The installation works will be completed within a couple of days, and the reading will be taken for 15 days.
