By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, FEB.4 . The formation of an `energy park' to explain the use of solar energy in the day-to-day life will be the highlight of the 20th Ideal Home Exhibition, which will begin at the Tamukkam Grounds on Friday.

The consumer goods' exhibition will feature a large range of products and highlight various alternative sources of energy available in the market. To create public awareness, a show on non-conventional energy has been arranged, and the expo will have a pilot plant where the demonstration will be held on the effective use of solar energy.

The 11-day exhibition is being organised by the Madurai District Tiny and Small Industries Association (MADITSSIA) and the All India Manufacturers Organisation.

Energy torch, solar batteries and solar cookers, wind power battery charger and other equipment will be on display, along with a energy van to be brought by the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency, which has joined hands with the organisers to propagate alternative sources of energy. Self-help groups (SHGs) and housewives will be educated on the applications of solar energy.

Talking to presspersons here on Tuesday, the MADITSSIA president, K. Ramachandran, said the Ideal Home Exhibition, organised for the 20th time in Madurai, would have 250 stalls. A cookery contest for women would be conducted on February 14. Cultural programmes, attractive prizes, lucky dips and bookstalls are the other attractions, besides workshops, seminars and quiz programmes.

S. Anburajan, chairman, exhibition committee, said as an extra precautionary measure, emergency exits would be provided and fire extinguishers would be put in place. The expo would have the energy bay as this year's theme. Housing and small business loans would be on offer from the government and private banks.

S. M. Vijayakumar, Senior Manager, Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency, said several types of solar energy equipment would be made available at the exhibition, and volunteers would explain their features.

The Collector, B. Chandra Mohan, will inaugurate the exhibition.
