Stage set for flower show

By Our Special Correspondent

KOZHIKODE FEB. 11. Besides presenting a riot of colours, the `Calicut Flower Show 2004' to be held here from February 13 to 18, would also feature informative and educative programmes on farm-related matters.

The event managers, Thomas Mathew, M. Rajan and N. Udayan, told mediapersons here today that nearly 200 competitions had been arranged to liven up the show.

One of the main attractions would be Murali, a native of Mannarghat, who excels in sculpting faces of world celebrities in ice, vegetables and butter. Besides demonstrating his prowess as a master sculptor, Murali would also lead a class in vegetable carving on February 15.

A day-long seminar on the increasing commercial significance of vanilla and medicinal plants would be held on the inaugural day, under the joint auspices of the Directorate of Coconut, Cocoa and Arecanut, the Agriculture Department and the Botanical Garden.

Another seminar would be organised on `safeda musali'.

The Kerala Agricultural University would exhibit the latest agricultural machinery and high-yielding seeds while Calicut University would exhibit its collection of rare medicinal plants.

Other participants in the flower show would be the State-Government- owned Vegetable and Fruits Promotion Council, the Regional Research Laboratory in Thiruvananthapuram, the Indian Institute of Spices' Research (IISR), Koothali District Farm, Agmark, Camco, leading florists in Kozhikode, and Calicut Agri Horticultural Society, which is organising the flower show. The organisers have also arranged entertainments, procession of flower bedecked vehicles and a competition to choose the `Pushpa Raja' and `Pushpa Rani'.
