MYSORE, FEB. 12. Abdul Kareem, retired Deputy Superintendent of Police, has sent a letter to the Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, seeking a directive to the Government to provide an "effective and reliable" security cover to him and his family in view of the threat to them from the forest bandit, Veerappan, in the wake of the death sentence awarded to four of bandit's associates. In the letter, Mr. Kareem has claimed that he and his family are exposed to threats from Veerappan, associates of the bandit, and extremist groups supporting the bandit since he began a crusade for justice for those killed by Veerappan's gang, including his son, Shakeel Ahmed. Although a police constable from the Mysore City Armed Reserve (CAR) is posted at his residence at Yadavgiri in Mysore, Mr. Kareem has claimed that he (the security guard) is neither reliable nor effective in providing security to him and his family.
