THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 12. The Vigilance today arrested the Special Village Officer of Nemom village, Manoharan Chettiar, on the charge of accepting a bribe of Rs. 5,000 from a person who approached him for a transfer of registry certificate. The official was produced before the Special Court here and remanded to judicial custody. The complainant, Vinil Kumar, a resident of Pappanamcode here, had approached the accused for a transfer of registry certificate for 47.5 cents in order to obtain a bank loan against the property. According to the Vigilance, when Vinil Kumar called on the official on February 7, he had demanded a bribe of Rs. 25,000 for issuing the certificate. After some haggling, he had reduced the demand to Rs. 15,000, out of which an advance of Rs. 5,000 was to be paid immediately and the rest after the bank loan was obtained. Vinil Kumar approached the Vigilance with a complaint and a team led by the Dy.SP, Anti-Corruption Bureau, C. P. Gopakumar, trapped the accused when he allegedly took the money in marked notes from the complainant on February 11.
