CHENNAI, FEB. 13. The Centre's `India shining' advertisement series in the electronic and print media has been challenged in the Madras High Court. In his petition, the legal wing president of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, A.P. Suryaprakasam, alleged that the advertisements amounted to "misuse of public funds for political and electoral gains, and abuse of the official machinery by the ruling party." The interests of taxpayers were being injured. The objections raised by Opposition parties and the Election Commission advice to stop the campaign "had fallen on deaf ears." "The misleading and false claims, propagated using public funds, attempt to brainwash voters and put the Opposition parties at a disadvantage," Mr. Suryaprakasam said, adding, "there is no even ground and fair play." India had the maximum number of poor and illiterate people in the world, and the contents of these advertisements were false. The petitioner prayed for an interim direction to the Union Cabinet Secretary not to permit such advertisements and to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition Government from using Government funds and official machinery to propagate its political agenda.
