NIZAMABAD, FEB. 15. The Andhra Pradesh Rural Poverty Reduction Project (Velugu) Project Director, K.V.Satyanarayana, said that social empowerment of women would come through equal education and health care of the girl child. Mr. Satyanarayana was speaking at the valedictory programme of the three-day youth convention organised for the Mutually Aided Cooperative Societies (MACS) leaders at the Gram Abhyudaya Mandali training centre at Suddapalli in Dichpalli mandal on Saturday evening. The youth convention was facilitated by the Indur Inti-Deepam MACS Federation, an umbrella organisation of MACS groups in the district. The Indur MACS Federation has been promoted by Gram Abhyudaya Mandali, an NGO working in Nizamabad and Adilabad districts. The three-day convention deliberated on various issues concerning women. Health care of women, awareness campaign on AIDS, environment, education, livelihood, self-employment opportunities, were some of the areas covered in the last three days. Government officials spoke on horticulture, drip irrigation, bio-farming and vocational education. Two MACS representatives for 15 MACS societies were selected to participate in the convention. The three-day youth convention was in tune with the Youth Employment Summit held in Hyderabad last year. Two women representatives were selected and sent to attend the summit. Addressing participants, the GRAM Director, N.Samson, called upon them to take a lead role in mobilising youth in their respective mandals to organise similar youth camps for community awareness on health, environment, education and livelihoods. He said dairy has been identified as the most promising livelihood activity for the district. The district administration and the Nizamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) has extended support. The APRPRP State Consultant on Micro Finance, Venkat Rao, said that SHGs should be critical while adopting new lifestyles. The Assistant Director of Horticulture, Y.V.S.Prasad, explained the advantages of drip irrigation. He said the Government is providing 50 per cent subsidy to farmers who wish to take up drip irrigation. The Executive Director of the BC corporation, Madhukar Babu, District Medical and Health Officer, Krishna Rao, UNICEF school health coordinator, Krishnaiah, Velugu District Project Managers - John and Sneha, besides Regional Manager of APMAS, Raghu and Chairman of National campaign on youth empowerment, Jason Devaraj, addressed the participants.
