Jolt to `maha prakaram' project

By G.P. Shukla

TIRUMALA, FEB. 15. The TTD's move to construct `maha prakaram' (precinct) at the temple of Lord Venkateswara here has received a jolt and run into rough weather with none other than the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, instructing the TTD top authorities to take the advice of Sri Tridandi Ramanuja Chinna Jeeyar Swamy and other peethadipathis and Vaishnava mathadipathis before proceeding further. The directive came at a time when almost all the dismantling work of the Thousand Pillar Mandapam, situated in front of the temple complex, is complete and the levelling work at the site is nearing completion.

The instructions from the Chief Minister came in the wake of serious reservations reportedly being expressed by the Union Minister, B. Dattatreya, over the implementation of master plan at Tirumala, including construction of Maha Prakaram and dismantling of the Thousand Pillar Mandapam and re-erecting it at some other suitable place within the four mada streets. Sri Tridandi Chinna Jeeyar Swamy, who also met the Chief Minister, expressed his serious reservations regarding the implementation of the master plan.

Divergent views were expressed when the TTD proposed to construct a massive `maha prakaram' around the temple complex. The TTD initially toyed with the idea in December 2002 and got a resolution passed in the trust board meeting the same month.

Conflicting views started pouring in soon after the TTD board's resolution to go ahead with the project.

Annoyed with the objections and the powerful sentiments attached to them, the Chief Minister summoned the TTD top officials to Hyderabad on Saturday and instructed them to be very cautious and take up the developmental works strictly in accordance with the procedures laid down in the `sastras.'
