New income insurance scheme for farmers

By Sarabjit Pandher

MULLANPUR (LUDHIANA), FEB.16. The Union Government has decided to introduce an income insurance scheme for the farm sector, replacing the previous crop insurance scheme, as well as cover the risk factor caused by fluctuations in the international market prices of agricultural produce.

The decisions would be implemented from the coming "paddy" season.

This was announced by the Union Agriculture Minister, Rajnath Singh, while addressing a rally organised by the Youth Wing of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) here this afternoon.

He also promised that in case the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was voted back to power, the interest rates on farm loans would be further slashed to seven per cent.

Mr. Rajnath Singh said that the income insurance scheme for farmers would be introduced in 100 districts across the country.

He appealed to the people of Punjab to pressure the Chief Minister, Amarinder Singh, into stop placing impediments and allow the implementation of the scheme in at least 15 districts of the State.

The new scheme would protect the income of the farmers.

Mr. Rajnath also announced that the Union Government would pay 75 per cent of the premium.
