Amita Singh is now in Congress

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, FEB. 16. The former Bharatiya Janata Party's Uttar Pradesh Minister, Amita Singh, today joined the Congress on a day when the former Union Minister, Maneka Gandhi, joined the BJP.

The decision to admit her was announced by the Congress Working Committee member, Birender Singh, who manages party affairs in the State. Ms. Singh followed in the footsteps of her husband and former Union Minister, Sanjay Singh, who had crossed over from the BJP last year. The arrival of the couple was expected to boost Congress prospects in the State, especially in Amethi.

Ms. Singh, who represented the Amethi Assembly constituency, held independent charge in the Bahujan Samaj Party-BJP coalition government. She expressed dismay at the policies of the BJP. She said it was not the ``party with a difference'' it claimed to be.

In her opinion, politics in Uttar Pradesh was not restricted to caste-calculations and she expressed confidence that the people of the State would turn to the Congress. This was because they had had experience of the BJP, the BSP and the SP.
