JAIPUR, FEB. 16. India has the capacity to double its production of salt, which currently stands at 16 million tonnes annually, by utilising the 5.50-lakh acre area across the country identified for taking up the salt production activities. India now ranks third in the salt production in the world, after the U.S. and China. These facts were brought to light during a two-day international conference on edible salt organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Central Government's Salt Commissionerate, which ended here on Sunday. The participants called for upgradation of quality and enhancement of purity of salt produced in the country. It was pointed out that though India had made rapid strides in terms of quality and area covered for salt production, there was a vast scope for improvement in the regions such as mechanisation of the salt field operation, salt harvesting, salt loading into ships and modernisation of salt works on a scientific basis. The Salt Commissioner, S. Sundaresan, pointed out that salt was the most suitable vehicle through which additional micro-nutrients like iodine and iron could be administered efficiently.
