CHENNAI, FEB. 19. Members of the Shastri Bhavan Central Government Employees' Coordination Committee yesterday staged a lunch-hour demonstration opposing merger of dearness allowance with basic pay. The merger was against Fifth Pay Commission guidelines, A. Bhaskar, general secretary, said in a press release. Claiming that employees of over 50 Central government departments, functioning in and around Shastri Bhavan, participated in the demonstration, he said the protest was also against withdrawal of the facility to get treatment as outpatients in private hospitals under the Central Government Health Scheme. The committee sought formation of the 6th Pay Commission and increase in the income tax exemption limit.
