CHENNAI, FEB. 19. A three-day national seminar on `Women veterinarians - in science and society' was inaugurated today at the Madras Veterinary College. The objective of the seminar was to explain to participants the opportunities in various aspects of veterinary science and the prospective areas of research for the students, according to the organisers. Anandavalli Mahadevan, Vice-Chancellor, Mother Teresa Women's University inaugurated the meet. Some of the topics to be covered at the seminar include status of women in the profession, the role of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, bio-technology, studies on clinic-haematological changes in chicken experimentally infected, pathology and pathogenesis of Newcastle disease in poultry, profile of rural women entrepreneurs engaged in dairy farming and scope for them in wildlife related research. Women vets from Assam, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharastra and Uttar Pradesh, besides those from the State are participating. Lalitha John, the organising secretary, said, " unlike their counterparts in other States, women vets in Tamil Nadu have set up clinics, small animal fertility clinics, surgeries and extension work to promote the research findings among cattle owners in rural areas. A few professionals from the State would share their experience at the meet. R.Kadirvel, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, V. Jaganathan, chairman and managing director, United India Insurance Company and R. Xavier, director, Veterinary Sciences, Tamil Nadu, addressed the seminar.
