CHENNAI, FEB. 19. A prisoner escaped from a Saidapet court on Wednesday, when a constable accompanying him was busy handing papers to a clerk. Kannan, 28, slipped away from the Ninth Metropolitan Magistrate court, where he was produced for extension of remand. He was arrested for alleged involvement in theft cases at West Mambalam and Vadapalani. He was brought in from Tiruchi, where he was undergoing imprisonment. Two policemen brought Kannan and another prisoner to the court on Wednesday. In the crowded court, Kannan was alone with a constable for a few minutes, when the other prisoner was produced in court. When his guard reached out to give court documents to the clerk, Kannan fled. Police were unable to trace him. A case has been registered at the Saidapet police station.
