Man held on charge of murdering wife

By Our Staff Correspondent

MYSORE, FEB. 20. The city police today claimed to have solved the mystery behind the murder of a 32-year-old housewife at Vijayanagar here last month by arresting her husband on charges of masterminding the killing.

Shyamala's husband, K.V. Mahesh, who is also the brother of K.R. Pet MLA, Chandrashekar, was produced in court today.

The police said they suspected Mahesh, a businessman, in the murder after the reappearance of the missing jewellery of the deceased in the house three days after they were assumed to be the cause of the murder.

Mahesh is believed to have given the police contradictory versions during the inquiry, which made the investigators suspicious about his role.

The police said Mahesh was summoned to the Vijayanagar police station on Thursday on the pretext of identifying a person who had been arrested in connection with the murder of his wife.

Mahesh, who was in K.R. Pet, arrived at the police station the same evening.

After interrogating him till 1 a.m. on Friday, the police were convinced about Mahesh's role and took him into custody.

Mahesh was grilled by the Deputy Commissioners of Police, Poonacha and Subramanya, and the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Chandrashekar Prasad.

Shyamala, a mother of two children, was found murdered in her house at Vijayanagar first stage on January 23.

Mahesh himself informed the police about the murder the same afternoon.

The police found Shyamala lying in a pool of blood with her throat slit with a sharp weapon.

The jewellery was also reported missing. The police had found two gold bangles, a gold chain, a gold watch, and a case containing gold rings, among the jewellery that was missing.

The reappearance of the jewellery in the house three days after the murder set the police on the right trail. A number of Mahesh's relatives and supporters turned up at the Mysore court complex, where he was produced before the magistrate.

They criticised the police saying Mahesh had been implicated in the case.
