Two die in house collapse

CHENNAI, FEB. 22. Two persons died when a house they were repairing collapsed on them at East Tambaram yesterday.

The Selaiyur police said the two were demolishing the dilapidated house on Valmiki Street when the ceiling and walls collapsed. One of the workers, yet to be identified, died on the spot. R. Gajendran (33) was pulled out of the rubble and taken to the Chromepet Government Hospital. He was referred to the Government General Hospital where he died this morning.

Woman robbed of chain

A youth robbed a gold chain from a woman at Jothi Nagar, near Tiruvotriyur, last night.

The police said Radha (45), selling paint in her house, was with her daughter, Jenitha. Radha's husband was out for work, while her son had gone to attend a marriage. Around 9-30 p.m., the youth entered the house on the pretext of buying paint. He attacked Radha with a knife and snatched a 10-sovereign chain from her. He escaped on a waiting motorcycle. Radha sustained injuries and was reported to be out of danger.

Cash, jewels stolen

Thieves broke into a Shiva temple at Kilpauk and stole jewels and money from the hundi. The police said the miscreants climbed the wall of the Ardha Naareeshwar Temple in Aaravamudhan Gardens, broke open the hundi and doors of the shrine housing the deities. The burglary came to light this morning.

The police said a music system from a car parked in the locality was also stolen.
