95 per cent children covered in second round

By R. Sujatha

CHENNAI, FEB. 22. About 95 per cent of 73 lakh children (0-5 age group) in the State were administered polio drops during this year's second round of pulse polio campaign held today. Chennai Corporation covered 4,05,303 children against an estimated 4,08,000 children, said an official of the Directorate of Public Health. Those who did not receive the vaccine would be covered during the course of the week.

From tomorrow, health workers will take up a door-to-door campaign to cover children left out in this round. Vaccines will be administered at all health posts until Friday, according to a Corporation spokesman.

The Public Health official said though complete data for the State would be available only tomorrow morning, figures from 13 districts, including Ramanathapuram, Salem, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagercoil, Tirunelveli and Chennai, showed that 95 per cent of the children had been covered.

More than 3.65 lakh children were yet to receive immunisation.

Irrespective of the previous immunisation — whether it was administered 10 days ago or yesterday — children would be given the vaccine, the official said. "Even if the child is born today it can be given the vaccine."

The Deputy Mayor, R. Thiagarajan, inaugurated the campaign at the Perumalpettai Corporation Welfare Centre at Purasawalkam.

The programme in the city was organised by the Corporation Health department with the support of Rotary Clubs, voluntary organisations, staff of government departments, private practitioners and hospitals.

Immunisation posts were set up in parks, bus stands and railway stations.

Doctors and nurses volunteered to administer the drops to the children.
