NEW DELHI, MARCH 2. Three persons have been arrested by the West Delhi police for allegedly being involved in several cases of auto-lifting. The police claimed to have solved 18 cases with the arrest of the accused, who are said to have links with gangs in North-East and Nepal. Following a tip-off, the Anti-Auto Theft Squad of the West Delhi police had laid a trap near Janak cinema on Sunday afternoon and arrested three persons, Amit Kumar, Rakesh and Manjit. They were found to be travelling in a stolen Mahindra Scorpio jeep. At their instance, a stolen Maruti Esteem car and a scooter were also recovered. Interrogation of the accused, who belong to Sharad Pandey gang notorious for vehicle thefts, revealed that they were active in West, North-West, South and South-West Delhi. They used to target mostly new vehicles parked outside houses and not having any security alarm. Usually, they operated between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. and after stealing two or three vehicles, they used to travel to Siliguri and Nepal where they used to dispose of the vehicles. A person, code named "John", used to call them up from North-East and ask them which vehicles to steal. One of the accused was earlier arrested by the Assam police. However, he had managed to escape. The accused also revealed that they stole vehicles for joy ride or using them to steal other vehicles. The accused are used to living a lavish life and often enjoy vacations in Nepal.
