Jail warden held for buying illicit liquor

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, MARCH 2. A warden of Tihar Central Jail was arrested on the charge of purchasing illicit liquor just outside the jail in West Delhi on Monday. While the police have recovered two cartons of liquor from his possession, they have arrested two more persons who had allegedly supplied the consignment to the warden to be given to someone inside the jail.

According to the police, Dadan Choudhary, the warden of Jail No. 4, was standing by the roadside in a scooter just behind the Tihar Jail premises when around 11 p.m., a Maruti 800 car bearing Haryana registration number stopped near him. Two men came out of the vehicle carrying two cartons. They allegedly handed over the cartons to Dadan and were about to leave when a Police Control Room team spotted them and overpowered them.

The team opened the boxes and found liquor bottles in them after which they handed over Badan and two others to the local police. The other two later identified themselves as Narendra and Sanjay. During interrogation, the warden reportedly indicated that he had procured the liquor at the instance of a jail inmate. The police said they were yet to verify all the facts in the case. Meanwhile, all the three have been booked under the Excise Act at the Janakpuri police station.

Incidentally, there have been instances in the past when people were caught smuggling in drugs and other articles for use by inmates, against some payment. Though the jail authorities have been claiming that they have made strict arrangements to curb such type of activities, it is alleged that some of the inmates still succeed in getting things smuggled in through illegal means.
