Translators must `trans-create', says writer

By Our Staff Correspondent

UDUPI, MARCH 5 . Usha Rajagopalan, writer, said on Friday that a translated work would be perfect if the translator "trans-created" the original work.

Speaking after inaugurating the Pejawar Sadashiva Rao Memorial Endowment Literary Programme at the Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai Research Centre here, Ms. Rajagopalan said literary works in various languages could reach all readers only through translation. But the quality of translation was uneven. Some of them had failed to do justice to the original works.

English had its limitations when it came to situations that were unique to India and vernacular languages. Pather Panchali was the best-translated work in English, which she had read, she added.

Padekallu Vishnu Bhat welcomed the gathering. Muralidhar Upadya Hiriyadka delivered the introductory remarks. K.K. Pai, registrar of the Academy of General Education, presided over the function. D.R. Panduranga proposed a vote of thanks.

Jayant Kaikini, writer, K. Ganapati Bhat, Principal of the MGM College, and S. Shyamsundar, were present.
