MUMBAI, MARCH 9. Film actor Om Puri today joined the Congress but said he would not contest the elections. At a press conference here, he said, "I had made the BJP victorious the last time but now I intend to ensure the victory of the Congress." The AICC spokesman, Kapil Sibal, was present at the conference. Mr. Puri said the BJP had made many mistakes and that the Gujarat riots could not be condoned. "The riots were shameful. I was in London at that time and could not sleep for several days." The Congress had also committed mistakes in the past, but he was confident that the party would not repeat them.
