Alternative suggestion

Sir, — Here is an alternative to having a "none of the above" option in electronic voting machines. If less than 50 per cent of the electorate turn out for voting in a constituency, it should be assumed that the voters have rejected all the candidates. Fresh elections with a fresh set of candidates could be held in such constituencies.

Sir, — I believe that most of the people are unaware of the rule that the polling officer is bound to record the voters' unwillingness to accept any of the contestants if such a demand arises. This, however, violates the voters' right to secrecy. The ideal solution is the "none of the above" provision.

Pandalam, Kerala

Sir, — Our politicians should undergo a course to learn about the basic tenets of the Constitution, Indian history, `dharma', how to live a disciplined life, and how to think positively like real statesmen. There should be a test at the end of the course and grades given.

Sunil Beniwal,
Jaipur
