BANGALORE, MARCH 15. Two senior IAS officers of the rank of principal secretary to the Government have decided to resign or retire from service to contest the Lok Sabha elections. They are Bulla Subba Rao, Principal Secretary for Housing, and S.L. Gangadharappa, Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare. While Mr. Subba Rao has decided to contest on the Congress ticket from the Bidar (SC) constituency, Mr. Gangadharappa will contest on the Janata Dal (Secular) ticket from the Kolar (SC) constituency. Mr. Subba Rao, in the natural course, will be retiring from the IAS in July 2005. He told The Hindu that he had only orally sought the Congress nomination and was expecting to be fielded by the party. Though hailing from Andhra Pradesh, he is well acquainted with Bidar District where he had served as the Deputy Commissioner for two years. Mr. Gangadharappa will be retiring from service very shortly on April 1. However, as the last date for the filing of nominations for the Lok Sabha elections from Kolar is March 31, he is stated to have sought voluntary retirement. According to reports, the former Chief Secretary, B.S. Patil, who has joined the Congress and has been appointed the State's Representative in New Delhi, is keen on contesting the Lok Sabha elections. His brother, R.S. Patil, has already been chosen as the Congress candidate for the Bagalkot Lok Sabha seat which he had represented in the dissolved House. The Congress is eager to field a new face against the 96-year-old BJP leader, Ramachandra Veerappa, who is keen on defending the Bidar Lok Sabha seat from where he was first elected as a Congressman in 1962.
