BANGALORE,
MARCH 15.
Sources in STAMPIT said it had prepared the groundwork in this regard. They said the State Government had already handed over cases relating to the racket to the agency. However, STAMPIT was continuing the investigation in Karnataka as the CBI had not indicated which cases it would like to take over. Sources said investigation of all the 15 cases was almost complete and a final chargesheet was being prepared.
They said STAMPIT had been filing chargesheets and continuing investigation as it did not want the probe to come to a standstill.
It was only on March 11 that the CBI filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court seeking to take over 48 of the 156 cases registered against Abdul Karim Telgi, the prime accused in the scam and his associates.
The Supreme Court on Monday permitted the CBI to take over the 48 cases.
While the CBI will be taking over 10 of the 15 cases so far registered by STAMPIT in Karnataka, it will be looking into 23 of the 97 cases in Maharashtra.
In Karnataka, the CBI is likely to focus on the Madivala case which deals with the telephone tapping incident.
Sources said the CBI wanted to form special teams as the investigation was likely to be a long process. However, the agency was unlikely to investigate aspects that had already come out.
The agency would also request the State Governments to direct the special teams, STAMPIT and other agencies that have been investigating the cases to cooperate with it. Incidentally, a CBI team was in Bangalore recently to interrogate Telgi.
Sources said the CBI was likely to interrogate Telgi again shortly.
