TUMKUR MARCH 15. The bandh in Tiptur town of Tumkur district on Monday was total. It was called by the Farmers' Welfare Society in protest against, what its members described, "power crisis in over 30 villages in Tiptur taluk." Shops and business establishments remained closed. Vehicles, including buses, were not allowed to pass through the town. A large number of vehicles were stranded on the Bangalore-Honnavar Highway which passes through the town. However, schools and colleges were exempted from the bandh as examinations are in progress. Government offices recorded thin attendance. Nearly 3,000 farmers who came from villages gathered at Kodi Circle and from there they marched to the office of the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company and staged a dharna. M. Mallikarjuna Reddy, Assistant Executive Engineer of BESCOM, told farmers that a line was being planned from the Tiptur main station to augment power supply to the rural feeders 3 and 4. After the line was commissioned, power supply to over 40 villages in Tiptur taluk would improve. A farmers' delegation met the Assistant Commissioner (Tiptur), S.P. Shadakshara Swamy, and presented a memorandum to the Government. The agitators said the villages had been facing power crisis for the past two years. Villages did not have power during the night.
