MYSORE, MARCH 15. The Deputy Commissioner, Kumar G. Naik, said here on Monday that consumers in rural areas were not aware of their rights and the consumer movement was confined to urban centres. He was speaking after inaugurating the World Consumers' Day celebrations organised by the Food and Civil Supplies Department and another organisation. The Deputy Commissioner said there was a need to create awareness about consumer rights among the rural population who were susceptible to exploitation by unscrupulous traders. The Deputy Commissioner pointed out that there was a need for greater awareness among the public of their rights as consumers in view of globalisation which had resulted in the markets being flooded with products. The consumer movement in the country was in its nascent stage and non-governmental organisations and other Government departments had to work hard to spread the movement and cover the growing number of consumers in the country. The Mysore Grahakara Parishat conducted a camp to demonstrate food adulteration detection to the public to mark the World Consumers Day. Other NGOs involved in consumer movement also held similar programmes in the city.
