Life term for Blueline driver

NEW DELHI MARCH 19. In a gruesome killing in which a private bus driver ran over the vehicle over his competitor following a quarrel about bus timings last year, a Delhi court today sentenced Dalbeer for life.

Additional Sessions Judge J M Malik also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on Dalbeer for killing Sonu, a contractor operating a bus service in Kalkaji area of South Delhi, on January 27, 2003.

According to police, just a day before the incident, Dalbeer, who was a driver in a bus plying between Anand Vihar and Mehrauli, had a quarrel over bus timings with the conductor of another bus on the same route.

The conductor, Shamshad, told the police that Dalbeer confronted his contractor Sonu the very next day. After a minor scuffle, the blueline bus driver ran over his bus over Sonu who died in hospital.

Salwan School programme


NEW DELHI MARCH 19. Salwan Montessori School (SMS) celebrated its annual cultural programme, `Parivartan', at its premises this past week. It was a special day for the children as they got an opportunity to display their creativity. They gave a glimpse of their acting skills through the play `Parivartan'. The theme of the play was that change is the essence of life and it teaches us tolerance, hard work, patience, sacrifice, determination and perseverance.

Well-known actress Sushma Seth, who was the chief guest on the occasion, congratulated the students for their excellent performance. The Chairman of the Salwan Education Trust, S.D.Salwan, gave away prizes to the winners.

Seminar on information system

NEW DELHI MARCH 19. A seminar on "Geographical Information System For Engineers'' will be organised by the Maharaja Surajmal Institute of Technology (MSIT) at its premises on Saturday night.

The GIS, according to MSIT, affiliated to the Guru Gobind Indraprastha University, has marked a new era in information technology and innovations for the new millennium.

The Jawahar Lal Nehru University's G.V.Singh will inaugurate the seminar, while the keynote address will be delivered by the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee's H.Sinvhal.

Eminent speakers like NIC's Vandana Sharma, TCS's Dipak Anand, Birlatec's Praveen Aggarwal and GIS development magazine's Bal Krishna will give lectures on technology.

New members of Customs board

NEW DELHI MARCH 19. The Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) has announced that two officers of the 1968 batch of the Indian Customs and Central Excise Services have joined as its new members. The two officers of 1968 batch of the Indian Customs and Central Excise Services are B.K.Mishra and Siddharth Kak. Before they became members of the CBEC, Mr. Mishra was the Director General of Audit, while Mr. Kak was holding the post of the Director General of Vigilance.

Both the officers have wide experience in different fields of the Indian Customs and Central Excise Department.

IACM franchisee centres

NEW DELHI MARCH 19. The Institute of Advanced Computing and Management (IACM) will be opening franchisee centres in Gujarat's Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Bhavnagar and Rajkot. The IACM will give training to the staff of these franchisee centres so that they achieve excellence in business.

The IACM has been rated as the number one network training institute by India Today. It has also been awarded with ISO 9001-2000 certification and the Golden Peacock Award for innovative pedagogical techniques.

`Sati' site draws crowd

Samastipur MARCH 19. In a bizarre incident, an 80-year-old woman immolated herself on her husband's funeral pyre at village Shardida in Samastipur in public view following which the place is being venerated as a `sati' site.

According to Rukiya Devi's son Jagdish Yadav his mother completely broke down at the death of her husband Raghu Yadav (90) on Thursday and unable to bear the loss, she rushed to the cremation site quietly without fanfare and jumped into the funeral pyre.

She was charred to death on the spot, Mr. Yadav and other villagers, who witnessed the scene, added.

District Superintendent of Police Meghnath Ram, however, denied that the woman had committed `sati', although he confirmed her death.

Following spread of the report like wildfire, a large number of devout women thronged the site where Rukiya Devi had allegedly committed `sati' and offered prayers as a token of tributes to the departed soul.

Akalis complain to CEC

Chandigarh MARCH 19. Alleging change of home districts by "many senior police officers" ahead of polls, the Shiromani Akali Dal today complained to the Chief Election Commissioner seeking for a high-level probe into the matter.

"Punjab Government has done these changes in the home districts of senior police officers just to circumvent the model code of conduct," SAD secretary Daljit Singh Cheema said in a letter to the CEC, adding otherwise these officers would have been transferred out of their present place of posting.

"Though seven such cases have been reported but actually their number is much more," he claimed, adding it is "a glaring violation of model code of conduct."

Film institute at Noida

Ghaziabad MARCH 19. The Chairperson of U.P. Film Development Council, Jaya Bachchan, announced the setting up of a film institute in Noida.

Additional Chief Executive Officer, Noida Developent Authority, Dena Jheesh Panda said Ms. Bachchan, at a high-level official meeting here, informed that the proposed Noida Film Institute will have the latest facilities for students and will encourage film-making in India.

Panda said Ms. Bachchan instructed the former director of National Film Institute P.K. Nagar to prepare the project, adding the land selection and procurement procedure has begun in Noida's Sector 16.

The meeting was attended by senior officials of Noida Development Authority and Uttar Pradesh Information Director Sanjay Bhatia.

Candidate shot at

Rohtak MARCH 19. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate from Rohtak Lok Sabha constituency Lokender Singh Phougat, alias Jojo, was shot at and injured by an unidentified assailant at his residence in Vikas Nagar locality here late last night.

Mr. Jojo, with a bullet injury in the abdomen, was rushed to the PGIMS here where he was operated upon. His condition was stated to be stable.

Investigations were on.

Arm seized, man held

NEW DELHI MARCH 19. One person has been arrested by the North-East Delhi police for allegedly possessing a country-made revolver.

According to the police, Mohammad Irfan (22), a resident of Chand Bagh in North-East Delhi, was arrested on Wednesday afternoon. During interrogation he told the police that he had procured the weapon from Muzzaffar Nagar in Uttar Pradesh for Rs. 2,000.
