Letters to the Editor
Sir, Mindless anti-intellectualism appears to be reaching new levels, as book after book is sought to be banned in Maharashtra. Gopinath Munde has made the absurd demand that Jawaharlal Nehru's "Discovery of India," be banned. Written when he was in prison during the freedom struggle, Nehru's book was an honest and informed attempt to make Indians understand themselves by examining the great synthesising processes at work in our society and culture. If schoolbooks today portray Shivaji as a patriot who resisted oppression in his time, it is precisely because of the efforts of Nehru and other nation-builders.
