PIL's value

Sir, — The Supreme Court, while dismissing the public interest litigation challenging the Government's decision to waive the customs duty on Sachin Tendulkar's Ferrari car (March 16), said it had become a fashion to file PILs and warned the petitioner that it would impose costs of Rs. 50,000. Was it necessary to react so sharply to the PIL? It should not be forgotten that his efforts have brought in Rs. 82 lakhs to the Government. Public-spirited people are over-enthusiastic and it is this spirit that has kept our institutions going. Judges like Krishna Iyer encouraged PIL in no uncertain terms.

N.G.R Prasad,
Chennai
