CHENNAI, MARCH 22. The Venu Srinivasan-led TVS Motor Company Ltd has teamed up with the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board to provide cleaner and cheaper potable water to Hosur residents. A suo motu initiative by the TVS Group as part of its `Project Outreach', the scheme went on stream today within one month of the commencement of work. The government-industry effort, it is claimed, will address the huge water shortfall faced by the people of Hosur. The exercise involved revival and upgrading of the Kelavarapalli Dam Water Treatment Project. The dam proved a key source of water for this region. High ammonia and phosphate contents, however, rendered the water undrinkable. The people were forced to rely on borewells and external sources, triggering an adverse effect on groundwater and the eco-system of the region. According to TVS sources, the project could get off the ground in record time, thanks to the intervention by the Chief Minister. Armed with a feasibility study, the company sought the help of consultants to undertake the upgrading of the dam, through application of advanced technology. A company release claimed that this was the first time in India that such an advanced water treatment technology of global standards was used. Close to one lakh people live in the Hosur region. It needs 66,50,000 litres a day. Prior to the implementation of the project, it was getting 31,00,000 litres a day. Company sources said the project cost Rs. 50lakhs, which was borne by TVS and the TWAD Board. Though water supply comes under the domain of TWAD Board, company sources said, "We are committed to maintaining the treatment plant.''
