Congress unlikely to change candidates

NEW DELHI, MARCH 22. The Congress is unlikely to change the candidates agreed upon by the two major factions in the Kerala unit for the Lok Sabha polls notwithstanding the high command assigning an independent agency to assess the winnability of the nominees for three seats.

Following objections raised by the DCCs concerned, the high command has entrusted an independent agency to assess the winning prospects of three candidates - the senior leader, K. Karunakaran's daughter, Padmaja Venugopal, in Mukundapuram, Edward Edezhath in Ernakulam and V. Balram in Kozhikode, Congress sources said here. ``However, it is highly unlikely that the candidates will be changed since the names were cleared by both Karunakaran and the Chief Minister, A. K. Antony,'' they said. The party yesterday renominated five sitting MPs from Kerala but failed to finalise names for 12 other seats, including these three, apparently due to sharp differences.

However, those whose names have been cleared by Antony and Karunakaran have started campaigning making it difficult for the high command to effect any last-minute changes. — PTI.
