Mammootty denies taking up Coca-Cola's offer

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MARCH 25. Pressure from various quarters, it seems, has prompted the Malayalam superstar, Mammootty, to give up an offer from Coca-Cola to act as its brand ambassador in Kerala, where several environmental groups are calling for its boycott.

Ending a weeklong debate in the media over the propriety of his promoting the Coca-Cola brands in the State, the actor issued a statement denying that he had taken up the role of a brand ambassador.

"I was away from Kerala in connection with a shooting and the controversy came to my notice only upon my return," he said, apparently to justify the delay in reacting to the media reports.

Mr. Mammootty issued this statement in his capacity as the chairman of the CPI(M)-controlled television channel, `Kairali'.

The reports said that the shooting of the advertisement was over and the footage featuring Mr. Mammootty was scheduled to be released for telecast in April. Mr. Mammootty's two-line statement was silent on this. He was also not reachable on his mobile phone today.

When contacted, Coca-Cola India's vice-president (public affairs and communications), Sunil Gupta, said the company was not in the habit of discussing its publicity strategies in public.
