The Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Misra, addressing newspersons in Chennai on Thursday.

CHENNAI, MARCH 25. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has formed teams to investigate the 48 cases relating to the fake stamp paper scam which are to be taken over by the agency on the orders of the Supreme Court, U.S. Misra, Director of the agency, said on Thursday.

Mr. Misra, who was on a familiarisation visit to the city, told reporters that the 48 teams were going to various places to take over the cases. "I am sure that within a week all these cases will be taken over by the CBI", he said.

The CBI was already probing 11 stamp paper cases and had 59 cases of national and international ramifications. A majority of the cases were in Maharashtra and Karnataka and some in Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and a few other States. An Additional Director and a Joint Director of the Economic Offences Wing would supervise the probe along with four Deputy Inspectors-General of Police and a large contingent of investigators.

The agency had requested the State Governments to attach the investigators (who were hitherto conducting the probe) to the CBI in the initial stages along with logistics until the agency fully took over the investigation.

The probe would be closely monitored by senior officers of the agency.

Answering a question, Mr. Misra said the agency's officers were in Mumbai and they had met senior officials of the Maharashtra Government to complete certain formalities before the cases there were taken over. A CBI team was expected in Tamil Nadu (where two cases were pending) any day. He said no timeframe could be fixed for completing investigation in the cases.
