Agnivesh to contest against Vajpayee

By Our Special Correspondent

LUCKNOW, MARCH 25. The Arya Samaj leader and social activist, Swami Agnivesh, has expressed his intention to contest the Lok Sabha election against the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, from Lucknow.

Swami Agnivesh, who is contacting voters in the high-profile constituency, said he could revise his decision only if the Opposition projected some other candidate "powerful enough" to defeat Mr Vajpayee. He had taken the decision to challenge Mr. Vajpayee in the "larger interest of the country" and not for any personal considerations, he told newspersons here today.

The Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party have already announced their candidates against Mr. Vajpayee, while the Congress nominee is yet to be decided. As for the Left, it has little presence in Lucknow.
