Judicial remand for Madhumani

LUCKNOW, MARCH 25. Amidst high drama, Madhumani Tripathi, wife of the former Uttar Pradesh Minister, Amar Mani Tripathi, and an accused in the high-profile poetess Madhumita Shukla murder case, today surrendered before a special CBI court here after evading arrest for about four months.

Ms. Madhumani, accompanied by her lawyers, surrendered before the Special Judicial Magistrate, CBI, Digvijay Nath, who remanded her to 14 days' judicial custody till April 8.

Before her surrender, a scuffle took place between CBI sleuths and Madhumani's lawyers reportedly resulting in minor injuries to her and one of her counsel, Vijay Vikram.

Mr. Vikram alleged the CBI sleuths manhandled her and tried to forcibly whisk her away ostensibly to show that she had been arrested.

As Madhumani's lawyers moved a surrender application in the court, the CBI sought police remand for five days. Rejecting the CBI's plea, the court remanded her to judicial custody.

The court fixed April 2 for further hearing on the application.
