Ban on SIMI upheld
NEW DELHI,
MARCH 25.
Two-and-a-half years after the Centre declared the Students Islamic Movement of India unlawful, a tribunal has upheld the ban saying there was ``sufficient cause'' for the Centre's decision. Justice R.C. Chopra of the Delhi High Court, who headed the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal, in his order said ``there is sufficient cause for declaring SIMI unlawful'' and as such the Government's notification in this regard issued on September 26, 2003 ``stands confirmed.''
Justice Chopra passed the order on March 23 against SIMI that was banned by the Centre for its activities were ``detrimental to peace, communal harmony, internal security and maintenance of secular fabric of the country,'' a Home Ministry spokesman said here today.
